Claude Dashboards: How AI Is Redefining Dashboard Creation in Controlling

BI2run - dashboards

You spend hours moving bars around, adjusting colors and wiring up filters. Last week, Anthropic released a beta that turns exactly this part of your work on its head.

Claude Dashboards is not another BI tool. It is an AI layer that builds a finished dashboard from your data: KPI cards, interactive filters, tooltips. You describe what you need. The AI builds it. The tool’s limits are real. A concrete look at the beta shows when it is worth using anyway.

What Is Claude Dashboards?

Claude Dashboards is a beta feature of the AI platform Anthropic Claude, available since October 2026. Users upload a dataset and describe the dashboard they want in natural language. Claude analyzes the data, selects suitable visualizations and builds an interactive dashboard – without the user writing a single line of code or configuring a chart manually.

Under the hood: Claude reads in the data using Python, normalizes it, models it dimensionally and renders the charts with D3.js and JavaScript calculations. The Sources panel transparently shows how each metric is calculated – right down to the source code.

Why Is the Timing Crucial for Controlling Teams?

Power BI and Tableau have dominated the reporting ecosystem for years. Both tools have their strengths. Both require significant investment in training, licenses and maintenance. Claude Dashboards is taking on this market head-on.

The difference from the previous approach is fundamental: until now, the question “Which chart type works best for this analysis?” has been a task for a BI developer. With Claude, it is a task for the AI. The human reviews the result – and needs data literacy for that, not tool knowledge.

Finance teams that understand and critically evaluate AI tools today are building expertise that will matter in the coming years. Claude Dashboards is a concrete starting point: a low barrier to entry, free to access today, and a real learning effect for every team.

What would an AI-powered dashboard look like in your controlling environment?

Using your own data, we’ll show you what is already possible today – and what isn’t yet.

How Does the AI Dashboard Builder Work in Practice?

A concrete example from the beta: an analyst uploads the Tableau Superstore dataset (orders, products, customers, regions) and asks Claude for a revenue dashboard. Claude:

  1. Reads in the raw data and recognizes the structure automatically
  2. Joins Orders with Returns and builds a denormalized JSON table
  3. Proposes a dimensional data model: Orders as the fact table; Product, Customer, Region and Date as dimensions
  4. Renders KPI cards, bar and line charts, interactive filters and a text summary that updates with the filters
  5. Shows the calculation and underlying code for each metric in the Sources panel

The result is not a perfect dashboard – but one that is built in minutes instead of hours and serves as a working basis for further iterations.

Particularly useful: the comment feature. You can comment anywhere in the dashboard or ask Claude directly about a metric. Claude answers in the chat context without interrupting the dashboard build.

What Can’t Claude Dashboards Do Yet?

Honesty matters here. The beta has clear limitations that are relevant for production use in controlling:

LimitationImpact on day-to-day controlling
No row-level securitySensitive data (e.g. personnel costs) cannot be shared selectively per user
No automatic data refreshDashboards show data as of a fixed cut-off date – no live reporting possible
No audit logWho viewed what and when cannot be traced – critical for compliance
No admin controlsIT governance and central administration are still missing
Export only to Sigma, Hex, OmniPower BI and Tableau are not yet supported (Tableau announced)
Login required for recipientsShared dashboards require a Claude account – no anonymous viewing

Our verdict: For exploratory analyses, internal prototypes and quick ad hoc analyses, Claude Dashboards is already a powerful tool today. For regulated environments, consolidated reporting or external stakeholders, you still need a full-fledged BI platform.

Which Concrete Steps Do We Recommend for Controlling Teams?

Claude Dashboards changes which skills are in demand in controlling. The need for expertise remains. What is shifting:

  • Understand data modeling: AI-generated dashboards are only as good as the data behind them. If you think dimensionally (facts, dimensions, metrics), you get better results.
  • Critically review results: In the beta test, Claude overlooked data errors – for example, non-unique product IDs. Business plausibility checks remain a human task.
  • Sharpen your visual communication: AI dashboards quickly start to look uniform. If you understand the effect of color, hierarchy and layout, you will stand out.
  • Test now, don’t wait: The beta is free to access. A test project with a non-sensitive dataset will show you in two hours what the tool can do for your team.

Why BI2run Puts AI Developments in Controlling into Perspective for You

For years, we have watched new technologies promise to revolutionize controlling – and seen many of them quietly disappear again. Claude Dashboards is not hype. It is a real step in a new direction, but one that is not yet ready for every scenario.

Our focus is on AI agents in controlling and on integrating AI into existing finance systems. When we recommend that you test something, it is because we have tested it ourselves.

FAQ

How Does Claude Dashboards Differ from Power BI or Tableau?

Power BI and Tableau are full-fledged enterprise BI platforms with mature governance, row-level security, data refresh and admin management. Claude Dashboards is an AI authoring layer: faster to build with, but currently still without these enterprise features. They complement each other rather than replace each other.

Can I Connect Claude Dashboards to IBM Planning Analytics?

There are no direct connectors yet. The workaround: export data from Planning Analytics, upload it to Claude and visualize it there. For production reporting, IBM Planning Analytics Workspace remains the better choice – until direct integrations become available.

Who Can View Shared Dashboards?

Recipients need a Claude account. Roles (Viewer, Commenter, Editor) are assigned via email invitations. Anonymous viewing – for example via a public link – is not possible.

How Does Claude Handle Data Quality Issues?

Claude detects many issues automatically, but also misses some – in the beta test, for example, non-unique product IDs. A business plausibility check by the controlling team is still necessary. AI does not replace domain knowledge here.

Can Claude Dashboards Be Used in Compliance with the GDPR?

That depends on your internal data protection policies and Anthropic’s contract terms. For sensitive financial data, we recommend involving your data protection department before use. For initial tests with sample data that contains no personal data, there are no restrictions.

What Data Skills Do I Need to Use Claude Dashboards Effectively?

A basic understanding of dimensional data modeling, SQL and visual communication helps considerably. You don’t need to be a developer, but you do need to be able to assess AI-generated results from a business perspective. That is exactly what makes controlling teams the natural experts for this tool.
